New research suggests that drinking just one 16-ounce energy drink (Rockstar, Rockstar Inc) significantly increases blood pressure and stress hormone levels in healthy young adults. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure increased by an average of 6.2% and 6.8%, respectively. Furthermore, levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine jumped over twice as much after drinking the energy drink when compared to a placebo drink. While only 25 participants were evaluated in this study, further research is warranted to assess how energy drinks affect overall heart disease risk.
