TGA Issues Safety Warning on Andrographis

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia recently issued a safety advisory warning consumers about the risk of allergic reactions from Andrographis paniculata, a plant commonly used in dietary supplements for the prevention of the cold and flu. The TGA warned that between December 2002 and April 2014, the TGA received 43 reports of anaphylaxis and 78 reports of other allergic reactions from people who took products containing Andrographis. The TGA noted that while Andrographis is usually safe, some people might have severe allergic reactions and consumers should seek immediate medical attention if any symptoms arise.
