FDA: Undeclared Drugs in Weight Loss Supplements

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a consumer warning for several weight loss supplements manufactured by Globe All Wellness, LLC.

The FDA discovered that the weight loss products, falsely marketed as supplements, contained sibutramine, making them unapproved drugs. Sibutramine is a main ingredient in Meridia, a drug for obesity. Sibutramine is a type of central nervous system (CNS) stimulant, also called psychomotor stimulants or uppers. CNS stimulants are a class of drugs that speed up physical and mental processes.

Sibutramine can cause increase blood pressure or pulse rate, which may cause significant risks to patients with heart disease, heart failure, abnormal heart beat rates, or stroke. Sibutramine may also interact adversely with prescription drugs.

The seized products containing sibutramine include SlimXtreme, SlimXtreme Gold, SlimPlus, SlimLee, GelSlim, SlimDrops and Colonew. Individuals taking these products should report any negative side effects to their healthcare provider and the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.
