FDA Issues Warning About the Use of Dietary Supplements for Concussions

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a warning to consumers about that lack of evidence supporting the use of any supplements for the treatment of concussions.

A concussion, also known as a closed head injury, is a mild brain injury in which trauma to the head results in a temporary disruption of normal brain function. Due to recent reports about the dangers and potential repercussions of concussions in school sports such as football and soccer, there are increased concerns surrounding these injuries.

According to the statement issued by the FDA, some companies are currently taking advantage of public concern surrounding concussions in children and are marketing products that are untested and possibly dangerous, claiming that they can prevent, treat, or cure concussions. The FDA noted that they are currently monitoring how products are being marketed, and are taking the necessary steps to remove these claims from product labels.

The FDA notes that even though some of these products may not contain harmful ingredients, they can still be dangerous by claiming to speed up recovery time. The main concern is that athletes and coaches might think that they can resume activities after receiving a concussion faster than they should because they are using one of these products.

The FDA strongly warns consumers that despite what claims they may see or hear, there is no scientific evidence suggesting any dietary supplement is beneficial for concussions.
