However, preliminary clinical research suggests that white horehound only slightly lowers blood glucose when taken in combination with antidiabetic agents, suggesting that the effect may not be clinically significant (86369). Until more is known, use with caution. Theoretically, white horehound may have additive effects when used by patients taking antidiabetic drugs. The dose of diabetes medications might need to be adjusted. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Evidence from animal research suggests that taking white horehound extract lowers blood pressure (49408,86367). Theoretically, taking white horehound with antihypertensive drugs might enhance therapeutic effects and increase the risk of hypotension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

In vitro research suggests that wild cherry can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) enzymes (6450). Theoretically, wild cherry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. However, so far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Honey from the Black Sea coast of Turkey, which is derived from the nectar of rhododendrons, has caused respiratory depression, dizziness, sweating, weakness, bradycardia, atrioventricular (AV) block, hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias, and myocardial infarction within a few minutes to several hours after consumption.
Cardiovascular ...Honey from the Black Sea coast of Turkey has been linked with a unique form of poisoning. Honey from this region sometimes contains excessive concentrations of grayanotoxins from rhododendrons, which can cause bradycardia, atrioventricular (AV) block, cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and hypotension within a few minutes to several hours after consumption (12220,55110,55126,55129,55238,55269,55270,55280). Fatalities have not been reported. Patients typically respond to fluids and reversal of cardiac conduction abnormalities with atropine.
Dermatologic ...Topically, the use of honey applied to wounds can cause local pain, stinging, and burning in about 5% of patients, some of whom stop treatment as a result (16356,16357,16358,16361,91362,97694,96595). Theoretically, honey may cause excessive drying of wounds, which could delay healing. This can be managed by application of saline packs as needed (7850).

A case of accidental poisoning has been reported for a 56-year old women who consumed approximately 300 grams of wild cherries that had been steeped in alcohol the evening before symptom onset. The patient presented to the hospital the following day with symptoms including headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and severe dyspnea. Eventually the patient became comatose and hypotonic. After regaining consciousness the following day, the patient continued to experience severe sinus bradycardia, as well as disorientation, hallucinations, delusions, and agitation. After about 3 weeks, the patient began to experience blurred vision and tingling sensation of the lower limbs. The symptoms were eventually attributed to cyanide intoxication; the wild cherries the patient had consumed contained 4.7-15 mg/kg cyanide (41565).
