In 2004, Canada began regulating natural medicines as a category of products separate from foods or drugs. These products are officially recognized as "Natural Health Products." Symptoms of toxicity can include bradycardia with hypotension, increased heart contractions, and reflex hypertension. Canadian hemp can also cause topical irritation of the gastrointestinal mucous membranes. This irritation can result in a higher incidence of nausea and vomiting than with other cardiac glycoside-containing plants (such as digitalis) (18).
