INSUFFICIENT RELIABLE EVIDENCE to RATE

• Angina. A meta-analysis of four generally lower-quality clinical trials in patients with angina shows that taking corn silk decoction in combination with hypolipidemic drugs reduces levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides and increases levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol by a small to moderate amount when compared with hypolipidemic drugs alone. Doses of corn silk used in the studies were corn silk decoction 60 grams daily or modified corn silk decoction containing corn silk 60 grams, corydalis 30 grams, Chinese cucumber 15 grams, and Allium macrostemon 15 grams daily for approximately one month (103364).
• Glaucoma. Increased intraocular pressure is a risk factor for glaucoma. Preliminary clinical research in adults with hypertension shows that taking a single dose of corn silk extract 130-260 mg/kg in 600 mL of water reduces intraocular pressure by around 4-10 mmHg over an 8-hour period. Reductions in intraocular pressure were dose-dependent (93869). It is unclear if this improvement would be sustained with extended use.
• Hypertension. A meta-analysis of five generally lower-quality clinical trials shows that taking corn silk in combination with antihypertensive drugs reduces blood pressure by a small amount when compared with antihypertensive drugs alone. Doses of corn silk used in the studies were 10-60 grams daily for 1-12 weeks (103362). In addition, preliminary clinical research in adults with hypertension shows that taking a single dose of corn silk extract 130-260 mg/kg in 600 mL of water reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure by around 5-13 mmHg over an 8-hour period when compared with placebo. Reductions in blood pressure were dose-dependent (93869). More evidence is needed to rate corn silk for these uses.

Juniper oil and berry have a long history of traditional use (12,103759).

Use of daily doses greater than 10 grams of juniper berries (about 60 berries) or 100 mg of juniper essential oil, or prolonged oral use longer than 4 weeks, have been reported to increase the risk of severe adverse effects such as convulsions or kidney damage (8,19,103759).

Most reported adverse effects are related to ingestion of excessive amounts of juniper berry oil. Symptoms of overdose include kidney pain and irritation, diuresis, albuminuria, hematuria, purplish urine, tachycardia, hypertension, convulsions, metrorrhagia, and abortion (4). Topically, juniper can cause skin irritation (4,103756). Repeated exposure to the juniper pollen can cause occupational allergies (6).
