You may see headlines about possible lead contamination in protein powders. A popular consumer organization recently tested 23 protein powders and ready-to-drink shakes. Plant-based proteins are particularly susceptible since they’re made from ingredients that can absorb heavy metals from soil. Findings showed that for several products tested, a single serving contained more lead than considered safe to consume in a day - with two products containing levels high enough that experts caution against using them. It’s advised to avoid protein powders with Prop 65 warnings on the label, limit the number of servings you have each week, choose whole foods, and consider dairy-based protein options when possible. We’ll keep you informed as more data becomes available.
