Solgar, Inc. Recalls ABC Dophilus® Powder

Popular supplement manufacturer Solgar, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of the probiotic product ABC Dophilus® Powder after it was found to contain the fungus Rhizopus oryzae.

Rhizopus oryzae is a fungus that might cause Mucormycosis, a rare infection that can affect even healthy adults, but particularly infants, children and those with weakened immune systems. This product was recently used in a hospital as part of the treatment for a premature infant who ultimately died from complications, including Mucormycosis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) testing identified Rhizophus oryzae in the 1.75 oz (50g) containers of Solgar ABC Dophilus Powder. Anyone who has purchased this product is urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to report any adverse events to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.
