There is growing concern about the safety of this product and similar energy drinks. As of October 23, 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has collected over 90 reports of serious adverse events in people consuming 5-Hour Energy products, including hospitalizations and 13 deaths. Other severe adverse events reported include anxiety, dizziness, chest pain, convulsions, mental status changes, myocardial infarction, palpitations, stroke, tachycardia, vomiting, and others (18061). In most healthy adults, this product can be safely taken when used appropriately. However, taking excessive amounts may result in serious side effects including death, likely due to caffeine toxicity. Advise patients against ingesting more than the recommended amount of this product or combining it with other caffeine-containing products or other stimulants. Advise patients at risk for cardiovascular toxicity against using these products.
